Steadying the ship.
It’s hard to keep a clear head right now.
Trade tensions. Global conflicts. A world trying to make sense of AI’s impact. The increasing pushback on the progress made in diversity, equity, and inclusion...
It feels like we are in a storm waiting for the next inevitable wave to crash.
Priorities are flip-flopping like never before. It’s easy to react to headlines, investor pressure and internal noise. But the result is that teams are confused, stretched thin and unsure what matters most.
I understand this temptation to react. In fast changing times, it feels like doing something – anything – is the right call. But not all action is progress.
Right now, rather than finding a way to ride the storm, I am seeing businesses creating their own mini maelstroms inside the organisation.
New initiatives being launched without clear context.
Strategy decks being rewritten every quarter.
Shiny tech investments with unclear ROI.
Culture initiatives that are misaligned with the reality on the ground.
The intent is always good. But the impact is mixed at best. Now more than ever is when it’s essential to steady the ship.
Revisit your purpose. Why do you exist beyond making money? Is it still relevant? Does your team believe it?
Clarify your long-term vision. What does success look like in 5–10 years? Not in buzzwords, but in meaningful, motivating terms.
Pick 3 strategic priorities, and stick to them. Let your people focus, align, and deliver - rather than spin in a cycle of constant change.
Communicate with calm clarity. Your people are watching how you show up. Be the signal, not the noise.
In uncertain times, reactive leadership adds to the chaos. Purpose, vision, and clear priorities don’t eliminate complexity - but they create a centre of gravity from which to weather the storm that carries on outside.
And when the next wave hits (and it will) you will be better place to turn into it.
